In theorie kunnen polymeren die gemakkelijk afbreken in verschillende natuurlijke omgevingen minder bijdragen aan het probleem van zwerfvuil op land en in de oceanen. Het tweede belangrijke doel van de SUP is echter de vermindering van gegenereerd afval als gevolg van wegwerpartikelen en de bevordering van het gebruik van herbruikbare artikelen.<\/p>\n<p>In sommige gevallen kunnen biologisch afbreekbare polymeren gunstige opties hebben voor het einde van hun levensduur in vergelijking met conventionele polymeren. Maar over het algemeen leidt de overstap van conventionele polymeren naar biobased\/biologisch afbreekbare polymeren voor wegwerpartikelen van plastic niet tot een vermindering van de hoeveelheid afval of (natuurlijke) verloren hulpbronnen. Ook verminderen biologisch afbreekbare kunststoffen vaak de risico&#8217;s die zwerfvuil van kunststoffen met zich meebrengt voor biodiversiteit (bijv. inslikken) niet (volledig), omdat hun afbraaktijd nog steeds relatief lang is vanwege omstandigheden of materiaaleigenschappen.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_69e89064acbfd{font-size:22px;font-weight:600;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_69e89064acbfd\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Onaangepaste natuurlijke polymeren en van nature voorkomende stoffen zijn vrijgesteld<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]Onaangepaste natuurlijke polymeren\/natuurlijk voorkomende polymeren (stoffen), zoals zijde, wol en cellulose, vallen buiten het bereik van de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/nl\/services\/wetgeving\/single-use-plastics-richtlijn\/\">SUP (Single Use Plastics)<\/a>. De SUP maakt gebruik van de definitie &#8220;onaangepaste natuurlijke polymeer&#8221; uit de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/nl\/services\/wetgeving\/reach\/\">REACH<\/a>-verordening om te beoordelen of een polymeer als zodanig wordt beschouwd. Een polymeer wordt alleen beschouwd als een onaangepaste natuurlijke polymeer, en dus vrijgesteld van de SUP, als het op geen enkele manier chemisch is gewijzigd.
