An EPD is based on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/services\/product-footprint\/life-cycle-assessment\/\">Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)<\/a> and is developed in accordance with specific standards (e.g.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/services\/product-footprint\/environmental-product-declaration\/en-15804\/\">EN 15804<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The finished document is verified by an approved&nbsp;system operator&nbsp;and published on one of the publicly available online platforms. These calculations are then processed and reported according to specific standards, for example EN 15804 for construction products. The EPD document is then created, reviewed by a third-party and validated via recognised programme operators. These calculations and processes follow the <strong>ISO 14040<\/strong> standard which sets out the principles and framework of conducting an LCA. <strong>ISO 14040<\/strong> is often used in conjunction with <strong>ISO 14044<\/strong> which details the requirements for how to perform an LCA in practice.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>EPD standards<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the context of EPDs, the most relevant standard is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/services\/product-footprint\/environmental-product-declaration\/iso-14025-type-iii\/\">ISO 14025<\/a>: Environmental labels and declarations \u2013 Type III environmental declarations. The standard specifies how Type III environmental declarations should be developed and communicated. By following these standards, EPDs (and the underlying LCAs) are methodologically consistent and comparable across similar products and sectors.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:20px;\"><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner el_id=&#8221;validity-and-typical-use&#8221;]<style>.vcex-heading.vcex_69e8901958a1b{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-bottom-border vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-border-b wpex-border-solid wpex-border-main vcex_69e8901958a1b\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Validity and typical use<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]EPDs are subject to different validity periods, however most are valid for 5 years. After this period, they will need to be reviewed and, if necessary, updated to reflect changes in data, processes or standards.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, EPDs are mainly relevant in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Business-to-business communication<\/strong> \u2013 Providing objective environmental data to customers, buyers and specifiers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Business-to-consumer communication<\/strong> \u2013 Supporting transparent sustainability claims.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eco-design and product development<\/strong> \u2013 Using the data to identify improvement opportunities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Green public procurement<\/strong> \u2013 Meeting environmental criteria in tenders and public projects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Building assessment schemes<\/strong> \u2013 Contributing data and credits for systems such as <strong>BREEAM<\/strong> and <strong>LEED<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:20px;\"><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner el_id=&#8221;other-types-of-epd&#8221;]<style>.vcex-heading.vcex_69e89019595da{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-bottom-border vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-border-b wpex-border-solid wpex-border-main vcex_69e89019595da\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Other types of environmental declarations (ISO 14021)<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Although less common, EPDs can also follow the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/services\/lca-epd\/life-cycle-assessment\/iso-14021-type2\/\">ISO 14021<\/a>: Environmental labels and declarations &#8211; self-declared environmental claims (Type II environmental labelling).<\/p>\n<p>Under ISO 14021, claims are self-made, self-certified, and self-published. These types of claims do not always include LCA data and do not require independent verification. However, to ensure reliability, the claimant is responsible for evaluating and providing the data for verification.
