Een EPD is gebaseerd op een <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/nl\/services\/product-voetafdruk\/levenscyclusanalyse\/\">Levenscyclusanalyse<\/a> (LCA) en wordt ontwikkeld volgens specifieke normen (bijv. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/nl\/services\/product-voetafdruk\/milieuproductverklaring-epd\/en-15804-epd\/\">EN 15804<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p>Het definitieve document wordt geverifieerd door een erkende programmahouder en gepubliceerd op een openbaar toegankelijke online platform. De berekeningen worden vervolgens verwerkt en gerapporteerd volgens specifieke normen, bijvoorbeeld de EN 15804 voor bouwproducten. Daarna wordt het EPD-document opgesteld, door een derde partij beoordeeld en via erkende programmabeheerders gevalideerd. Deze berekeningen en processen volgen de <strong>ISO 14040<\/strong>-norm, waarin de principes en het kader voor het uitvoeren van een LCA zijn vastgelegd. <strong>ISO 14040<\/strong> wordt vaak gebruikt in combinatie met <strong>ISO 14044<\/strong>, waarin de praktische uitvoering van een LCA wordt beschreven. <\/p>\n<h3><strong>EPD-normen<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>De meest relevante norm voor EPD\u2019s is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/nl\/services\/product-voetafdruk\/milieuproductverklaring-epd\/iso-14025-type-iii\/\">ISO 14025<\/a>: Milieu-etiketteringen en -verklaringen \u2013 Type III milieuverklaringen. Deze norm specificeert hoe Type III-milieuverklaringen moeten worden ontwikkeld en gecommuniceerd. Door deze norm te volgen, zijn EPD\u2019s (en de onderliggende LCA\u2019s) methodologisch consistent en vergelijkbaar tussen soortgelijke producten en sectoren.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:20px;\"><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner el_id=&#8221;validity-and-typical-use&#8221;]<style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a542ad8b6ffa{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-bottom-border vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-border-b wpex-border-solid wpex-border-main vcex_6a542ad8b6ffa\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Geldigheidsduur en toepassing<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]EPD\u2019s kennen verschillende geldigheidsperioden, maar de meeste zijn 5 jaar geldig. Na deze periode moeten ze worden herzien en (indien nodig) geactualiseerd, zodat wijzigingen in data, processen of normen worden meegenomen. <\/p>\n<p>Momenteel worden EPD\u2019s vooral gebruikt in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>B2B-communicatie<\/strong>: Door objectieve milieu-informatie aan klanten en inkopers te verstrekken.<\/li>\n<li><strong>B2C-communicatie<\/strong>: Ter ondersteuning van transparante duurzaamheidsclaims richting consumenten.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eco-design en productontwikkeling<\/strong>: Met de data kunnen verbeterkansen worden gevonden.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Duurzame overheidsaanbestedingen<\/strong>: Zodat voldaan wordt aan milieucriteria bij aanbestedingen en publieke projecten.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beoordelingssystemen voor gebouwen<\/strong>: EPD\u2019s kunnen worden gebruikt ter onderbouwing voor credits binnen gebouwcertificeringsystemen zoals <strong>BREEAM<\/strong> en <strong>LEED<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:20px;\"><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner el_id=&#8221;other-types-of-epd&#8221;]<style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a542ad8b7bee{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-bottom-border vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-border-b wpex-border-solid wpex-border-main vcex_6a542ad8b7bee\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Andere typen milieuverklaringen (ISO 14021)<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Hoewel minder gebruikelijk, kunnen EPD\u2019s ook worden opgesteld volgens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/services\/lca-epd\/life-cycle-assessment\/iso-14021-type2\/\">ISO 14021<\/a>: Milieu-etiketteringen en -verklaringen \u2013 zelfverklaarde milieuclaims (Type II milieuverklaringen).<\/p>\n<p>Met ISO 14021 worden claims door een organisatie zelf opgesteld, gecertificeerd en gepubliceerd. Dit soort claims bevat niet altijd LCA-gegevens en vereist geen onafhankelijke verificatie. Om de betrouwbaarheid te waarborgen, is de claimende partij wel verantwoordelijk voor het evalueren en aanleveren van gegevens ter onderbouwing. Ondanks deze bepaling gelden dit soort claims niet voor het behalen van credits in gebouwcertificeringsystemen.
