Ze worden vaak beschouwd als een duurzaam alternatief voor producten die zijn gebaseerd op fossiele hulpbronnen. De kwestie van de milieueffecten van biobased materialen is echter gecompliceerd. Om een evenwichtige afweging te maken van de integratie van biobased producten en materialen in de bedrijfsvoering of het dagelijks leven, raden we aan te kijken naar de levenscyclusanalyse (LCA) van biobased producten.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a38bb94ebf9a{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a38bb94ebf9a\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Levenscyclusanalyse (LCA) voor biobased producten<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/nl\/services\/lca-epd\/levenscyclusanalyse-lca\/\">Levenscyclusanalyse (LCA)<\/a> is uitermate nuttig bij het kwantificeren van de milieueffecten van biobased producten en cruciaal voor zinvolle implementatie van oplossingen die bijdragen aan een koolstofarme circulaire economie. De resultaten kunnen op verschillende manieren worden gebruikt:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>verbetermogelijkheden voor de productfabrikanten defini\u00ebren;<\/li>\n<li>vergelijken en\/of kiezen tussen het biobased product en zijn fossiele tegenhanger;<\/li>\n<li>om te beslissen hoe het gebruik van een biobased tussenproduct de milieuprestaties van het eindproduct zou veranderen;<\/li>\n<li>beslissingen nemen over beleid dat de biobased economy uitbreidt.<\/li>\n<li>Vanwege specifieke uitdagingen die gepaard gaan met het uitvoeren van een LCA voor biobased materialen, moeten de resultaten van een LCA-onderzoek zorgvuldig worden geinterpreteerd. Hieronder onderbouwen we de belangrijkste uitdagingen en overwegingen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a38bb94ed4dc{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a38bb94ed4dc\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Onvolwassenheid van technologie\u00ebn<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]Veel van de opkomende biobased materialen bevinden zich in de beginfase van ontwikkeling of komen net op de markt. Er is beperkte kennis over hoe ze zouden integreren met bestaande technologie\u00ebn en infrastructuren, en zonder te profiteren van de schaaleffecten die fossiele materialen hebben. Daarom zijn LCA&#8217;s voor biobased materialen vaak sterk afhankelijk van aannames en data die zijn verkregen door middel van modellering in plaats van verzameld uit echte processen. Hoe meer aannames worden gemaakt en modelleringsresultaten worden gebruikt, hoe minder zeker de resultaten van het onderzoek zijn met betrekking tot de praktijk. Men moet dus alert zijn bij het interpreteren van de onderliggende aannames en begrijpen wat deze betekenen voor de onderzoeksresultaten. Bovendien kunnen deze aannames een systeemasymmetrie cre\u00ebren tussen onderzoeken waarin biobased producten worden vergeleken met gevestigde fossiele alternatieven. Als een LCA dus gericht is op het ontwikkelen van een vergelijkende duurzaamheidsclaim, lijkt het meer op het vergelijken van een appel met een mystieke vrucht die nog nooit in de tuin is gegroeid. Over het algemeen mogelijk, maar om de betrouwbaarheid van de claim te waarborgen, moet de studie conservatief zijn in zijn aannames over hoe deze vrucht zou groeien, wat hij nodig zou hebben en of hij \u00fcberhaupt eetbaar is.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a38bb94eea38{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a38bb94eea38\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Effecten komen voor in verschillende categorie\u00ebn<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]In het moderne duurzaamheidslandschap gaat de meeste aandacht naar de uitdaging van klimaatverandering. Daarom is het verleidelijk om alleen te kijken naar de impact van het product op het gebied van klimaatverandering, en zullen andere milieukwesties gemakkelijk over het hoofd gezien worden. Het klopt dat het gebruik van biobased materialen per definitie de uitputting van fossiele abiotische hulpbronnen reduceert, echter zijn ze afhankelijk van grondstoffen die op andere manieren een grote impact kunnen hebben. Het telen van suikerriet voor de productie van bioplastic is bijvoorbeeld een grote landbouwinspanning die grote hoeveelheden land en water vereist. Gezien het LCA-resultaat is het nuttig om naar effecten in alle impactcategorie\u00ebn te kijken en deze in een sociaal-economische context te plaatsen wanneer ze worden gebruikt voor beleidsvorming.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a38bb94eff12{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a38bb94eff12\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">CO2-boekhouding<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]Historisch was er veel methodologische vrijheid voor de LCA-analist om rekening te houden met biogene koolstof (koolstof in de kortere natuurlijke cycli: opgenomen uit de atmosfeer tijdens biomassagroei en weer vrijgekomen bij biomassaverval of verbranding). De methodologische vrijheid zorgde echter voor veel discrepanties in de gebruikte modelleringsbenaderingen en categorisatiemethoden, die een cruciale invloed kunnen hebben op de uitkomsten en de interpretatie van de resultaten voor biobased producten. Bijvoorbeeld:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hoe wordt biogene koolstof meegenomen: krijgt het dezelfde impact factoren als fossiel of niet? En dus: zijn de resultaten geschikt om te benchmarken met andere onderzoeken of om te gebruiken in combinatie met andere onderzoeken?<\/li>\n<li>Houdt het onderzoek rekening met emissies die afkomstig zijn van veranderingen in koolstofvoorraden veroorzaakt door landgebruik en veranderingen in landgebruik, bijvoorbeeld door groeiende biomassa? Zo ja, hoe dan? En wat betekent het in de context van het onderzoek?<\/li>\n<li>Hoe vindt de allocatie van het biogene gehalte (binnen het eindproduct) plaats in productiesystemen waar de grondstof deels biobased en deels fossiel is? Wordt deze toewijzing geaccepteerd binnen het certificeringskader dat u wilt volgen?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ter illustratie, we krijgen vaak vragen over de interpretatie van de resultaten voor gebruik in EPD&#8217;s en PEF-onderzoeken. Er zijn twee biogene koolstoftoewijzingsbenaderingen gangbaar. De massabalansbenadering zegt dat als 10% van de grondstof voor het produceren van 100 producten biogeen is, dan zijn 10 producten 100% biobased, terwijl de andere 90 producten 100% fossiel zijn. Daarentegen suggereert de op massa gebaseerde verdelingsbenadering: als 10% van de grondstof biobased is, dan is elk van de 100 producten 10% biobased en 90% fossiel. Rekening houden met welke benadering in het onderzoek wordt gebruikt, is cruciaal voor het trekken van conclusies en het nemen van beslissingen voor het gebruik van tussenproducten in een eindproduct, en, op grotere schaal, voor beleidsvorming. De Environmental Footprint (EF)-methode, aanbevolen door de Europese Commissie, alsmede het raamwerk voor de bouwsector EN15804+A2 vereisen beide het gebruik van de op massa gebaseerde verdelingsbenadering.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a38bb94f107c{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a38bb94f107c\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Ecomatters support<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]Biobased materialen kunnen veel kansen bieden, maar zijn tegelijkertijd geen allesomvattende oplossing. We moeten voorzichtig zijn op welk moment en in welke context een technologie geschikt is voor implementatie op grotere schaal.
