Een veel voorkomende vervolgvraag die ons vaak wordt gesteld is, welke claims er gemaakt mogen worden en aan wie deze gecommuniceerd mogen worden, op basis van de uitgevoerde LCA. Het antwoord hangt sterk af van het type LCA dat is uitgevoerd, en van de reikwijdte van het onderzoek en de beoogde toepassing ervan.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a033efbd4e3f{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a033efbd4e3f\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Wat is een Milieuclaim?<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]Volgens ISO 14021:2016 wordt een milieuclaim gedefinieerd als &#8220;een verklaring, symbool of afbeelding die een milieuaspect van een product, een onderdeel of een verpakking aangeeft&#8221;. Deze claims kunnen verwijzen naar elke fase van de levenscyclusfase van een product, zoals hoe ze worden geproduceerd, verpakt, vervoerd, gebruikt of geconsumeerd en weg gegooid worden. Claims kunnen worden toegepast door middel van symbolen, logo&#8217;s of duidelijke uitspraken in communicatiekanalen zoals een website, een nieuwsartikel, een digitale mediapost, enz.<\/p>\n<p>ISO heeft milieuclaims ingedeeld in drie soorten:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Type I milieuclaims (ISO 14024:2018 Milieu-etiketteringen en -verklaringen &#8211; Type I milieu-etikettering &#8211; Principes en procedures): claims die een milieulabel geven aan producten die voldoen aan een reeks eisen die zijn vastgesteld door een overheidsinstantie of een particuliere organisatie. Dit soort milieuclaims zijn te zien in verschillende soorten producten in de vorm van logo&#8217;s om aan te tonen dat aan de criteria wordt voldaan. Voorbeelden zoals het EU Ecolabel, FSC en Energy star labels behoren tot deze claims.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/nl\/services\/lca-epd\/life-cycle-assessment\/iso-14021-type2\/\">Type II milieuclaims<\/a> (ISO 14021:2016 Milieu-etiketteringen en -verklaringen &#8211; Zelf vastgestelde milieu-uitspraken): vrijwillige claims van fabrikanten en bedrijven, dus &#8216;zelfverklaard&#8217;. Het doel is het stimuleren van de vraag naar &#8211; en het aanbod van &#8211; producten en diensten die het milieu minder belasten. Dat kan middels het communiceren van verifieerbare en nauwkeurige informatie over productaspecten op het gebied van milieu, die niet misleidend is. Dit soort claims verplichten niet tot het uitvoeren van een LCA-onderzoek, maar vereisen dat rekening wordt gehouden met relevante levenscyclusfasen van een product om de impact in de gehele waardeketen te identificeren.<\/li>\n<li>Type III milieuclaims (ISO 14025:2006 Milieu-etiketteringen en -verklaringen &#8211; Type III milieuverklaringen &#8211; Principes en procedures): deze claims bevatten milieu-informatie over de levenscyclus van een product en zijn gebaseerd op ISO 14040\/ISO14044 LCA-normen. Deze claims vereisen een diepgaande LCA, met verificatie en certificering door derden. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/nl\/services\/lca-epd\/milieuproductverklaring-epd\/\">Milieuproductverklaringen<\/a> (EPDs) behoren tot dit soort milieuclaims.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a033efbd6399{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a033efbd6399\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Greenwashing en dubbelzinnige termen<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]De richtlijn \u2018oneerlijke handelspraktijken 2005\/29\/EC\u2019 (Unfair Commercial Practices Directive 2005\/29\/EC) is de belangrijkste Europese wetgeving over oneerlijke handelspraktijken. De richtlijn is met name gericht op misleidende reclame die mogelijk de economische belangen van consumenten kan schaden of hun economisch gedrag kan verstoren. De richtlijn is van toepassing op \u2018business-to-consumer\u2019 praktijken en omvat milieuclaims. Er worden twee hoofdcategorie\u00ebn onderscheiden: beweringen die ofwel objectief zijn (d.w.z. het presenteren van valse informatie) of subjectief zijn (d.w.z. informatie is waarheidsgetrouw, maar de manier van presenteren kan de consument misleiden).<\/p>\n<p>Onder elk type milieuclaim (type I, type II en type III) moeten claims die aangeven dat een product milieuvriendelijk kan zijn (claims als &#8216;milieuvriendelijk&#8217; of \u2018groen&#8217;) worden vermeden. Hetzelfde geldt voor duurzaamheidsclaims die bijvoorbeeld aangeven dat een product \u201cduurzamer is dan X\u201d. De complexiteit van het begrip duurzaamheid geeft ruimte voor interpretatie en kan niet onder een dergelijke claim vallen.<\/p>\n<p>Gezien de dubbelzinnigheid van dergelijke termen en daarop gebaseerde claims, zullen ze waarschijnlijk worden ge\u00efnterpreteerd als greenwashing &#8211; &#8220;the act of misleading consumers regarding the environmental practices of a company (firm-level greenwashing) or the environmental benefits of a product or service (product-level greenwashing)\u201d[1]. Daarom ondersteunen de resultaten van een LCA of CO2-voetafdrukberekeningen dergelijke claims niet.<\/p>\n[1] Delmas, M. A., &amp; Burbano, V. C. (2011). The Drivers of Greenwashing. California Management Review, 54(1), 64\u201387.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a033efbd7288{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a033efbd7288\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Welke soorten claims kan ik indienen met een LCA?<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]De resultaten van een LCA, of het nu een screening of een diepgaande LCA is, geven de milieu-impact van het onderzochte product of systeem aan.<\/p>\n<p>Het is belangrijk om erop te wijzen dat er geen expliciete en schriftelijke ISO- of LCA-norm is voor wat een bedrijf juridisch gezien met de resultaten van een LCA kan doen, aangezien dit buiten het bereik van de normen valt. Er is echter een algemene communicatiewetgeving van toepassing en als zodanig kunnen vage of oneerlijke milieuclaims worden onderworpen aan juridische procedures tegen de instelling die ze maakt.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a033efbd7f66{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a033efbd7f66\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Claims met een LCA-screeningsonderzoek (Screening Study)<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]De resultaten van een screening-LCA maken het mogelijk om kansen te identificeren voor vermindering van de milieu-impact binnen de waardeketen van een product. Daarnaast kunnen de resultaten van de LCA-screening worden gebruikt voor interne communicatie en voor het delen van milieu-informatie met zakelijke partners (B2B).<\/p>\n<p>Maar wat wordt beschouwd als interne communicatie en wat als B2B-communicatie? In principe omvat interne communicatie de communicatie binnen het bedrijf in de vorm van een presentatie, folderdocument, mondelinge presentatie enz. De B2B-communicatie omvat informatie die wordt gedeeld tijdens een zakelijke bijeenkomst, directe communicatie, enz.<\/p>\n<p>Laten we bijvoorbeeld kijken naar een LCA-screening van twee producten van hetzelfde bedrijf, Product A en Product B, waarbij Product A een grotere ecologische voetafdruk heeft dan product B. Een intern document kan uitspraken bevatten als \u201cVolgens de resultaten van de LCA-screening, is de CO2-voetafdruk van Product A X kg CO2eq\/kg, terwijl voor Product B de CO2-voetafdruk Y CO2eq.\/kg is\u201d. In zakelijke bijeenkomsten kan deze informatie worden gebruikt mits de context van het onderzoek duidelijk wordt gemaakt.<\/p>\n<p>Voor milieuclaims die bedoeld zijn om openbaar te worden gemaakt op de website van het bedrijf, op de productverpakking, en in het algemeen aan consumenten, is een diepgaand LCA onderzoek meer geschikt dan een LCA-screening. Dit is met name relevant als vergelijkende beweringen tussen producten van verschillende bedrijven, zoals product A van bedrijf A en product B van bedrijf B, openbaar worden gemaakt.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a033efbd8b85{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a033efbd8b85\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Hoe zit het met Milieuclaims Type II (ISO 14021:2016)?<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]Zoals vermeld in de vorige paragraaf, verplichten type II milieuclaims niet om een LCA uit te voeren, maar om relevante levenscyclusfasen van een product in overweging te nemen om de impact van de gehele waardeketen te identificeren. Daarom kunnen de resultaten van de LCA-screening (afhankelijk van het doel en de reikwijdte) worden gebruikt voor een zelfverklaarde milieuverklaring wanneer ze voldoen aan de ISO 14021: 2016. Voor dit specifieke doel moet de LCA-screening echter een zekere mate van detail en robuustheid hebben. Als een bedrijf ge\u00efnteresseerd is in zo&#8217;n milieuverklaring, is het daarom belangrijk om hier al rekening mee te houden tijdens het bepalen van de scope van de LCA-screening.<\/p>\n<p>Onze webpagina <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/nl\/services\/lca-epd\/life-cycle-assessment\/iso-14021-type2\/\">Milieuclaims type II<\/a> beschrijft in detail wat de eisen zijn om een milieuclaim type II in overeenstemming te brengen met ISO 14021.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a033efbd9cf1{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a033efbd9cf1\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Claims met een diepgaand LCA-onderzoek<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]De resultaten van een diepgaande LCA (in-depth LCA) stellen een organisatie in staat om extern hun milieu-impact te communiceren in business-to-business of business-to-consumer communicatie.<\/p>\n<p>De resultaten van een dergelijke LCA zijn geschikt om openbaar te worden gemaakt op de website van het bedrijf, de productverpakking en in het algemeen aan consumenten. Bovendien kunnen LCA-onderzoeken beoordeling en verificatie door derden omvatten, waardoor het onderzoek en de geldigheid ervan geloofwaardiger worden en minder snel in twijfel wordt getrokken door externe partijen.<\/p>\n<p>Voor externe communicatie (websiteweergave, verpakkingsweergave, publieksfolders en EPD&#8217;s) is het daarom raadzaam om gebruik te maken van de resultaten van een diepgaande LCA. Een voorbeeld hiervan wordt gedaan door Teijin Aramid, die op hun <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teijinaramid.com\/en\/hse-report-2017\/energy-and-environment\/\">website<\/a> en in hun HSE-rapport de CO2-voetafdruk van hun Twaron-garen communiceert op basis van een door derden geverifieerde diepgaande LCA, die Ecomatters voor hen heeft uitgevoerd.<\/p>\n<p>Voor zelfverklaarde milieuclaims type II (ISO 14021:2016) kunnen ook diepgaande LCA-onderzoeken worden gebruikt. Ze worden echter het meest gebruikt voor andere, sterkere soorten communicatieclaims, zoals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomatters.nl\/news\/ecomatters-creates-first-dutch-eco-platform-en15804-epds\/\">environmental product declarations type III<\/a> (ISO 14025:2016).[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a033efbdb044{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a033efbdb044\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Vergelijkende beweringen<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]Het openbaar maken van vergelijkende beweringen (beweren dat het product van een organisatie milieuvriendelijker is dan dat van een concurrent), vereist een vergelijkende LCA.<\/p>\n<p>Vergelijkende LCA&#8217;s voor vergelijkende beweringen die openbaar moeten worden gemaakt, hebben aanvullende vereisten om de volledige vergelijkbaarheid van producten te garanderen en moeten een kritische beoordeling door een extern beoordelingspanel bevatten. Een vergelijkende LCA is uitdagender, tijdrovender en arbeidsintensiever dan een gewone LCA. Het moet zeer gestructureerd, nauwkeuriger en zeer robuust zijn en vereist daarom meer middelen. Het is een gedetailleerd proces om mogelijke vooroordelen te voorkomen en om alle genomen beslissingen te rechtvaardigen die de superioriteit van het ene product boven het andere ondersteunen.<\/p>\n<p>Een voorbeeld van een milieuclaim op basis van een vergelijkende LCA zou zoiets zijn als &#8220;Voor markt X, product X met de kenmerken XXX en vervaardigd in XXX presteert beter dan het alternatieve product met dezelfde capaciteit en kenmerken in de beschouwde milieucategorie\u00ebn als de aannames op XXX representatief zijn voor de marktsituatie\u201d.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\"><\/div><style>.vcex-heading.vcex_6a033efbdbcf5{font-weight:700;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl vcex_6a033efbdbcf5\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Waar te beginnen?<\/span><\/h2><div class=\"vcex-spacing wpex-w-100 wpex-clear\" style=\"height:10px;\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]Het type claim dat u wilt maken, bepaalt het type LCA en het bijbehorende budget dat nodig is.<\/p>\n<p>Bijvoorbeeld, als je een zelfverklaarde milieuclaim wilt, dan kan een LCA-screening hiervoor voldoende zijn, afhankelijk van de beschikbaarheid en juistheid van de bedrijfsgegevens die nodig zijn voor de LCA.
