Terwijl er verschillende benaderingen zijn om dit probleem aan te pakken, zoals het verbieden van wegwerpproducten en het bevorderen van recyclingbewustzijn, biedt chemische recycling specifieke voordelen, vooral omdat het de potentie heeft om hoogwaardige materialen te leveren in tegenstelling tot de minderwaardige gerecyclede materialen die voortkomen uit mechanische recycling.<\/p>\n<p>Chemische recycling omvat het proces waarbij plastic afval chemisch wordt getransformeerd, waardoor de chemische samenstelling verandert en het wordt omgezet in waardevolle grondstoffen van hoge kwaliteit. Deze grondstoffen kunnen vervolgens worden gebruikt voor de productie van nieuwe chemicali\u00ebn of plastic producten. Elk proces vereist een specifiek type grondstof of invoerstroom, zoals gemengd plastic of polycondensaten, die onder specifieke omstandigheden worden verwerkt, zoals hoge temperaturen of oplossing in een specifieke stof. De output van deze processen kan bestaan uit monomeren, polymeren, aromatische verbindingen of brandstoffen zoals syngas of diesel.<\/p>\n<p>Bij het gebruik van kunststoffen als afvalstroom voor chemische recycling, resulteert dit meestal in twee soorten output: brandstof (olie) of een waardevol materiaal dat kan worden gebruikt als grondstof (polymeer, monomeer, aromatisch, enz.). De laatstgenoemde output wordt als de meest wenselijke beschouwd, omdat het de mogelijkheid biedt om de kringloop te sluiten, terwijl brandstofproductie alleen een secundaire levenscyclus mogelijk maakt door verbranding voor energieterugwinning.<\/p>\n<p>Hoewel chemische recyclingprocessen nog in ontwikkeling zijn en er enige onzekerheid bestaat over zaken zoals schaalbaarheid, economische haalbaarheid, milieu-impact en het vereiste logistieke systeem van afvalinzameling tot productoutput, wordt verwacht dat chemische recycling in de toekomst een levensvatbare oplossing zal worden.
