Ecomatters had a busy 2024! As we continue to settle into our new office space, we’ve also expanded our reach and expertise. This year, the upcoming CSRD reporting requirements for large companies sparked increased interest in our sustainability reporting support and led to an exciting new partnership with Moore MKW to support SMEs.
During 2024 we also continued our work calculating Product Environmental Footprints and completing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies. Additionally, we had the opportunity to collaborate with researchers, specialists and industry experts in consortiums tasked with the development and review of Product Category Rules to complement the EU Environmental Footprint methods.
In this article, we share some of our highlights from the past year. If you would like to learn more about any of the topics covered, please get in touch.
Sustainability Reporting
This year, Ecomatters supported several companies with identifying their material Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) topics via a Double Materiality Assessment. Through a series of workshops, we guided our clients on aspects such as stakeholder communication, impact, risk, and opportunity identification, and scoring. As well as how to determine when a topic is material. Our case study ‘CSRD Double Materiality Assessment for Nobian’ explains this process in more detail.
We have also been working with our clients to calculate their Scope 3 emissions. Calculating your Scope 3 emissions establishes a baseline to measure your emission reduction efforts against. It also helps you to identify where sustainability improvements can be made. Under the CSRD, companies are required to declare the materiality of their Scope 3 emissions.
EU Product Environmental Footprint Methods
Throughout 2024, we continued our work supporting several projects focused on the development and review of Product Category Rules for the EU Product Environmental Footprint methodology. This included the PEFCR for synthetic turf surfaces and the ongoing PEFCR development for the EU space sector. Visit out dedicated knowledge page to find out more about the process of developing product category rules.
Life Cycle Assessment Support
An LCA provides you with an in-depth understanding of the environmental impact across the entire value chain of a product or service. In 2024, Ecomatters supported clients in the manufacturing, construction, electronics, plastics, chemicals and paint sectors with the development and completion of LCA studies and the calculation of Product Carbon Footprints in accordance with ISO standards and Together for Sustainability guidelines.
Another aspect of our LCA support was working for CEPE, the European Council of the Paint, Printing Ink, and Artist’s Colour Industry, to update their Life Cycle Inventory database. Building on the previously published 2016 database, we worked with industry experts to update and validate already existing datasets, as well as incorporate new data including new raw materials. The database is now available for use by the members of CEPE.
70+ Environmental Product Declarations
We continued leveraging our expertise in LCA to help companies understand the environmental impact of their products and services. This year, we published over 70 Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) across major EPD platforms, including MRPI, PEP EcoPassport, Nationalmilieu Database, and IBU. Our EPDs covered 200+ product variations and assessed electronics, construction products, chemicals, paints and more!
Our website
We have been working hard on making our website a go-to resource for sustainability knowledge and insight. This has involved restructuring our website to make it easier to see the services we offer. We are also currently working on a new knowledge section of the website. Expected to launch early next year, our knowledge base aims to support you with understanding complex sustainability topics, standards and regulations.
