I joined the Ecomatters team as an intern in March 2023. A few months prior, I had decided to postpone my MSc thesis to take a step back from the constant pressures of university and part-time work. I saw this as the perfect opportunity to gain practical experience in the field, and I was fortunate to quickly land an internship at Ecomatters. My initial goal was to develop my skills and enhance my marketability for future job opportunities. However, as it turns out, this internship led to something much greater—I’m still here at Ecomatters nearly two years later.
The internship was my first experience in a corporate setting and so I had been somewhat apprehensive about transitioning from the flexibility of a university schedule to the structure of a full-time work environment, but the transition proved to be smooth. I credit this largely to the team at Ecomatters. From day one, I felt welcomed with open arms. Everyone was enthusiastic about having a new team member, and I always felt comfortable asking questions—any team member was happy to help.
During my internship, my primary task was to conduct a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for Ecomatters. While I had been introduced to LCA during a university course, the internship deepened both my knowledge and confidence in the methodology. Several factors contributed to this growth. First, having the time to fully immerse myself in the methodology was invaluable. University courses often require students to juggle multiple topics simultaneously, resulting in surface-level understanding. Second, being able to apply what I learned in a real-world context solidified my knowledge. Lastly, working alongside a team of LCA experts, who were always open to questions, created an environment conducive to rapid learning and development.
In addition to LCA, I was introduced to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and gained hands-on experience in this area. The knowledge and skills I acquired during this period were instrumental for my professional development and proved invaluable when working on my MSc thesis, which was also LCA-based.
Toward the end of my internship, I was offered a part-time position at Ecomatters while completing my thesis. Balancing the demands of academic research with part-time work as a sustainability consultant was no easy feat. However, with perseverance, support from my colleagues, and even offers to proofread my thesis, I managed to get through it—and I’m glad I took on the challenge.
I completed my thesis in July 2024, and since October 2024, I have been working full-time at Ecomatters. Since then, I’ve continued to expand my knowledge and skill set, particularly in the field of LCA. The journey has been rewarding, and I look forward to growing further as part of the Ecomatters team.
