End-of-Waste Status
Are you a recycler interested in gaining End-of-Waste status for your product? Or are you looking for support with identifying when End-of-Waste is met? Ecomatters can support you.
EU Waste Framework Directive (WFD) defines waste as ‘any substance or object which the holder discards or intends or is required to discard’. As part of the directive, the European Commission has created the End-of-Waste (EoW) criteria to establish when a waste has been transformed into a safe (intermediate) product or secondary raw material. By adhering to the EoW criteria, the recycled product can claim the EoW status. This means that it is no longer considered waste and is instead a recycled material.

Criteria for achieving end-of-waste status typically includes:
- Usefulness: The recycled material must have a clear intended use in its secondary life.
- Market Demand: There is a market or demand for the material.
- Compliance with Standards: Technical, environmental, and health standards and/or legal requirements for its intended use must be met.
- No Adverse Effects: Using the material should not lead to overall adverse environmental or human health impacts.
Why should you assess if you can claim EoW?
- Demonstrate to customers, regulatory bodies, and investors that your recycled material is safe.
- Obtain early warnings on the potential contaminants from the waste feedstock.
- Avert public relations (PR) issues.
- Instil confidence in your investors by showcasing your expertise in safe recycling practices.
