Health Product Declaration (HPD)
What is a Health Product Declaration (HPD)?
A Health Product Declaration (HPD) is a standardised, technical document manufacturers use to transparently disclose the chemical substances of their building products and any associated health-related information. Developed in accordance with the HPD Open Standard by the Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC), HPDs serve as a tool for architects, designers, and builders aiming to make informed decisions about material selection. An HPD is a valuable addition to lifecycle-based reports such as LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and EPD (Environmental Product Declaration).
While HPDs are a great tool for transparency on product contents, it is important to understand their limitations. An HPD is not a certification or third-party endorsement, nor does it evaluate the performance or quality of a product. It does not assess whether users may be exposed to chemical substances or determine any associated health risks. Additionally, HPDs do not serve as a tool for comparing or ranking products in terms of safety or sustainability.
Goals and Benefits of HPDs
- Enhanced transparency in the building industry through product contents declaration.
- Informed material selection through the disclosure of chemical compositions and potential hazards.
- Support for building certifications through contribution to credits in green building standards like LEED and WELL.
- Encouragement of safer alternatives through the identification of priority chemicals of concern and the promotion of safer substitutes.
- Standardised reporting using clear guidance and a consistent format for disclosing product contents and associated hazards.
HPDs and LEED Certification
HPDs play a crucial role in achieving credits under the LEED v4 and v4.1 rating systems, specifically within the Materials and Resources category. To qualify, an HPD must disclose product contents to at least 0.1% (1000 ppm) and comply with the HPD Open Standard. Third-party verified HPDs can offer additional benefits, such as extra credits toward LEED certification.
Creating an HPD
At Ecomatters, we offer comprehensive support in developing HPDs. We have a history in chemical safety and can identify and classify all ingredients in your product. The development of an HPD involves several steps designed in compliance with the HPD Open Standard:
- Ingredient Identification: We collaborate with your supply chain to identify and classify all ingredients in your product.
- Hazard Screening: Each ingredient is evaluated against priority hazard lists and assessed using tools like the GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals.
- Documentation: We compile the findings into an HPD that adheres to the HPD Open Standard, ensuring clarity and compliance.
- Publication: We assist in publishing the HPD in the HPD Public Repository, enhancing its credibility and accessibility.
