OnderhoudNL and VVVF launch Environmental label for painters

We would like to congratulate OnderhoudNL, an entrepreneurial organization of specialist real estate maintenance, renovation, restoration, insulation, painting and glazing (among others), and The Association of Paint and Printing Ink Manufacturers (VVVF) for the official kick-off of “Milieulabel schilderwerk”!

The environmental label for painters

The “Milieulabel schilderwerk” is an Environmental label that assesses the Carbon footprint of paint projects. Last June, a kickoff working session about the use of the environmental label took place with a number of front runners in the field of house painting at the Ecomatters office in Utrecht. The label can be used by painters and maintenance companies to provide insights to their customers about the CO2 footprint of their work. This is mainly focused on the type of paint, its use, the transport, and the lifetime of the work. Currently, the database contains over 320 paint products of numerous paints available on the Dutch market. The label indicates a score between A and G and has been developed on the basis of various Dutch and European scientific studies and is aligned with the thinking behind the product environmental footprint (PEF).

We are very happy to be able to translate our insights and knowledge about the lifecycle of paint and chemicals into an applied and practical tool that can easily be understood by non-experts. The tool focuses on using the same information needed to make cost estimates to create the Environmental label which can be added to an offer in just a couple of minutes.

Tool availability

At the moment, this tool is available for all painters and paint manufacturers in the Netherlands through OnderhoudNL and the VVVF. Ecomatters has supported this project over the last few years, both in the definition of the methodological framework and the development of the tool itself, and it is a great satisfaction for us to see how this tool is being adopted and used by the Dutch paint industry. We hope to keep witnessing the uptake of the tool and we will keep working on the development of such environmental labels.
