Ecomatters 2023: A year in review

In 2023, Ecomatters experienced a year filled with activity and progress. In this article, we provide an overview of some of our accomplishments from the past year. If you’re interested in working with us in 2024 and beyond, we welcome you to get in touch.

45+ EPDs

At Ecomatters, we specialise in delivering high-quality Life Cycle Assessment studies, adhering to the appropriate standards, to provide all the information required to formulate a robust EPD. In fact, last year alone, we completed 45 EPDs which covered 184 product variations.

An EPD, or Environmental Product Declaration, is a third-party verified document that shows the environmental impact of a product or service. The basis of an EPD is an LCA study in which environmental impacts are calculated. Ecomatters provides ongoing support throughout the process of producing an EPD, from data collection to verification and publishing. You can find out more about EPDs and the support we offer on our EPD page.

Of the 45 EPDs Ecomatters produced in 2023, 30 were for paint products. The remaining covered chemicals, electronics, construction products and water heaters. Additionally, the EPDs were published across four platforms. These were:

  • MRPI (Milieu relevante product informatie) – Platform for environmental data for construction products, independently tested.
  • RTS EPD program – Finnish EPD platform for a EPDs of building or building parts following EN15804:2012+A2:2019.
  • International EPD – A global EPD program for publication of ISO 14025 and EN 15804 compliant EPDs. International EPD was the first, and is the longest running, EPD program.
  • PEP Eco Passport – An international declaration program concerning electrical, electronic and HVAC products.

60+ Clients

EPDs are just a small part of the work we do at Ecomatters. We also work as extended team members, provide advice on chemical compliance and legislation, design and provide support with corporate sustainability reporting systems, complete carbon footprint calculations and work as part of research consortiums to provide life cycle management expertise.

The variety of our expertise meant that throughout 2023 we worked with 60+ clients, spanning a variety of industries from metal manufacturing, furniture and door production, elevators and electrical appliances, and chemicals and coatings production. You can find out more about the projects we have completed on our case studies page.

1 new office, and 4 new hires

On a more personal note, Ecomatters moved into our new office in Utrecht and welcomed four new team members to our ever growing organisation. We are proud of the work we achieved and are looking forward to what 2024 has in store!
